COMPETITIONS

As soon as you get the basics of speed skating, you can start comparing your abilities to others of your age around the country, Europe, or even around the world. Whether you compete national or international, skaters are divided in categories based on their age.

AGE CATEGORIES

Most competitions use the following cut-offs for categories, using the skaters age before the 1st of July preceding the competition.

Junior D 10, 11 and 12 years
Junior C 13 and 14 years
Junior B 15 and 16 years
Junior A 17 and 18 years
Senior above 19 years
Novice In UK's national competitions, skaters are allowed to try a competition without being a NISA member (see underneath), novices can therefore be of any age or gender.

NATIONAL COMPETITIONS

Competitions in the United Kingdom are organised by the National Ice Skating Association (NISA). Each year there are about 15 competitions held throughout the country. Anyone can take part in those competitions. You will be competing against people your own age / or own level.

INTERNATIONAL COMPETITIONS

Each year multiple international competitions are organised for all levels of skating. Most of the competition organised can be found on: Shorttrackonline. This website also keeps track of individual skaters progress by showing their competition results and personal bests per distance.

WHAT DO I NEED, TO TAKE PART IN A COMPETITION?

All skaters are welcome in most competitions in the novice category, this is for all ages. You just have to pay your race fee, usually 8 to 10 pounds. If you want to progress to the main competitions it will become necessary to be a member of a skating union, and of course your backpack need to be well stocked.
